Designed to introduce the students to various experimental
practices used in general chemistry, i.e., using balance, make
simple chemistry methods such as filtration, titration and
gravimetric analysis, making simple metathesis and redox
reactions and performing some gas and calorimetry experiments
and calculations.
The course aims to equip undergraduate chemistry students with
the fundamental principles of practical general chemistry. The
course also aims to introduce laboratory work, the use of
chemical glassware and simple devices, and writing reports for
the experiments and calculations.
1. Follow proper safety rules and practice proper way of
handling chemicals and laboratory equipment.
2. Cooperate with colleagues to perform the experiments.
3. Practice some basic laboratory operations involving the
use of the Bunsen burner, measuring the mass and
volume, and density calculations of solid and liquid
substances.
4. Apply gravimetric analysis experiments involving percent
water in a hydrate salt and empirical formula.
5. Investigate the limiting reactant and perform gravity
filtration.
6. Observe the evidence of chemical reactions involving
metathesis and redox reactions.
7. Conclude the identity of unknown substance depending
on its chemical reactions.
8. Differentiate between acid base and redox titration.
9. Obtain the molar mass of unknown volatile liquid by applying ideal gas equation.
10. Interpret the curves and calculations of calorimetry
experiment.
