This course is a specialized branch of laboratory medicine which involves the study of blood group antigens and antibodies. This course aims to apply the knowledge students acquired in theory as practice in the laboratory. Students will be taught the different techniques used in blood banking like washing RBCs, sampling blood from the donor, crossmatching the blood unit with the blood of the recepient and the preservation and storage of these blood units. Students will individually assessed on their ability to perform each task required of them aiming that at the end of the course each student will be fully trained in all the different processes taking place in blood banks.
Through practical application of the knowledge aquired in the theoritcal course, this lab will teach students how to draw blood from patients and interpret their CBC results which directly connects with the information aquired in the hemtaology and physiology courses. In addition, there's a connection with the information presented in frist aid guiding students to recognize and handle the different kinds of reactions that could happen during the blood collection phase and also the blood transfusion phase. Relations to pathology and immunology can also be found by presenting further details on the diagnosis of various illnesses like Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) and autoimmune diseases.
