Course Description

This course is the first of two courses designed to introduce students to the use, theory, fitting, prescribing, post-fitting care and contact lens solutions for spherical soft and rigid gas permeable contact lenses. The course will consist of 3 hours of classroom lecture, and 3 hours of laboratory per week.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to successfully and efficiently perform a basic contact lens eye exam that includes fitting, evaluation, and post-fitting care of spherical soft and gas permeable contact lenses.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences
  1. Knowledge & Understanding
    1. Understand the optics and design of standard spherical soft contact lenses and standard gas permeable contact lenses.
    2. Understand the manufacturing process of soft and rigid contact lenses.
    3. Understand the sequence and components of a contact lens pre-fitting examination.
    4. Recognize the clinical instruments that are uniquely associated with a contact lens examination including keratometry and topography.
    5. Identify the contact lens materials used in the design and manufacturing of soft and rigid lenses.
    6. Identify the various types of soft and rigid lenses in the Palestinian market.
    7. Understand lens fit evaluation and power determination.
    8. Identify the various care systems used for soft and rigid lenses.
    9. Understand the impact of chemistry of soft and rigid lenses relative to their interaction with the tear film and ocular surface.
    10. Recognize abnormalities of the anterior segment associated with contact lenses.

  1. Intellectual Skills
    1. Demonstrate the ability to apply and remove soft and rigid contact lenses on the eye.
    2. Calculate the appropriate fitting and power parameters for soft and rigid lenses.
    3. Measure & verify fitting and power properties and the surface quality of soft and rigid lenses.
    4. Apply the technique of differential diagnosis to problem solving associated with contact lens fitting.
    5. Evaluate soft and rigid contact lens fits.
    6. Formulate differential diagnoses for contact-lens related anterior segment complications.
    7. Interpret topography results.

  1. Professional & Practical Skills
    1. Conduct a through contact lens pre-fitting examination specific to initial & refitting of contact lenses.
    2. Evaluate the health of the anterior segment as especially related to contact lens wear.
    3. Fit & manage patients with soft and rigid lenses in an efficient and proper manner.
    4. Employ basic treatment and contact lens fitting decisions regarding anterior segment contact lens complications.

  1. General Transferrable Skills
    1. Independent learning
    2. Appreciate team work in lab
    3. Respect assisting personal
    4. Follow rules & regulations of clinic

Implement safe clinical procedures
