This clinical course will allow optometry third year students to independently provide comprehensive eye examinations in a practice setting under supervision of licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists.
By the end of this clinical course, students should be able to integrate data collected during direct patient care encounters to formulate a differential diagnosis and provide treatment and management plans to a wide variety of cases from various subspecialties including contact lenses, binocular vision, low vision, pediatric and primary eye care.
A) Knowledge & Understanding
1. Recognize the importance of proper case history taking in formulating a proper differential diagnosis.
2. Clarify the use of various subjective and objective optometric tests based on case presentation.
3. Explain the reasoning behind the assessment and plan of every patient encounter using evidence-based medicine.
4. Recognize eye emergencies.
B) Intellectual Skills
1. Demonstrate the ability to ask proper case history questions based on the patient’s chief complaint.
2. Identify the necessary entrance and refractive tests required based on the patient’s chief complaint.
3. Enhance refractive examination skills through regular practice.
4. Interpret the optometric data collected.
5. Assess the ocular condition of a patient based on the data collected.
6. Manage the ocular condition of a patient based on the data collected.
7. Identify the need to compose referral & consultation letters.
8. Demonstrate the ability to critically analyze patient cases using electronic databases and library resources.
C) Professional & Practical Skills
1. Conduct a comprehensive refractive exam in an accurate and efficient manner.
2. Conduct a comprehensive ocular health exam in an accurate and efficient manner.
3. Conduct a problem focused eye exam in an accurate and efficient manner.
4. Conduct advanced eye exams in all optometric subspecialties.
5. Conduct vision screenings on pediatric and adult populations.
6. Perform the necessary auxiliary tests in an accurate and efficient manner.
7. Record data collected through out the eye exam in an accurate and efficient manner.
8. Write a referral or consultation letter in a timely and professional manner.
