Course Description

This course includes: breeding behavior, source population, genotype environmental interaction, methods of selection for self and cross-pollinated crops(theory of application), breeding methods for pests

Course Objectives
  1. Understand important concepts related to the genetic improvement of crops.
  2. Focus on alternative plant breeding programs and procedures used in cross-and self-pollinated crops.
  3. Provide experience to develop and carry out plant breeding programs for cultivars development.
  4. Expose students to a wide range of oriented plant breeding literature.
Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

At the end of this course students will be able to:

  1. Know the concepts related to inheritance such as quantitative genetics, habitability, inbreeding etc….
  2. Measure and calculate to genetic and plant breeding parameters and utilize these parameters in his work.
  3. Enhance skills in the evaluation and selection of appropriate germplasm for target environment.
  4. Know the different breeding methods and choose the appropriate method for a specific trait of interested crop.
  5. Initiate, develop, carry out and manage specific breeding programs for the development of new cultivars through the use of updated technologies.
  6. Organize and present information related to plan breeding
