Course Description

This course covers some detailed aspects of optimizing research design for clinical and basic research. The design strategies of different types of research as well as skills for critical evaluation of research studies and literature will be the primary focus. It addresses the process of formulating appropriate research questions, objectives, hypotheses, techniques for reviewing literature, utilizing the library, approaches for testing relationships and patterns among variables, methods of data collection, methods for assessing and improving the validity and reliability of data and measures, and writing for publishing. In addition, the ethics of using animals and humans will be covered in this course.  Moreover, the importance of ethics, ethics related to medicine, and IRB will be also discussed. Students will be expected to complete the NIH training modules, a requirement for research submitted for Institutional Review Board approval.  Moreover, the students will be trained to use some practical software programs which are essential when to come to perform either qualitative or quantitative researches and to prepare published paper. These software programs include SPSS,  and EndNote.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the student should be able to

  1. Recognize steps in conducting research,
  2. Identify the various types of research classifications and how they are applied,
  3. Describe basic research approaches,
  4. Identify basic concepts of research such as research question, research problem, hypothesis, and variables.
  5. Select and define appropriate research problem and parameters,
  6. Search the literature and conduct an online computer search for potential information related to selected problem,
  7. Develop a research plan,
  8. Explain different methods in selecting research participants, sampling procedures,
  9. Write a project proposal to undertake a project and recognize the basic parts of a research proposal,
  10. Recognize different types of research designs and statistical tests commonly used in experimental research,
  11. Organize and conduct a research,
  12. Organize and analyze data,
  13. Determine the characteristics of a good research report,
  14. Write a research thesis, and recognize the difference between the style for writing  in  a research report for publication in a journal and a research report for a thesis,  
  15. Establish and develop a working bibliography,
  16. Explain ethical consideration involved in research,
  17. Read and evaluate a research report,
  18. Use different programs that help in conducting research such SPSS and EndNote.
  19. Identify common errors in interpretation in research and recognize the threats to validity and how to control them,
  20. Evaluate common statistical tests when they are used in research literature.
