Course Description

This course discusses the developmental functions, organization and administration of pharmaceutical services within the hospital. Methods of drug distribution are emphasized ,medication safety and management, sterile preparations and admixtures , preparation of TPN solutions and contemporary compounding

Course Objectives

Introduces the students to pharmacy service distribution and dispensing functions including purchasing and inventory. Clinical services including centralized and decentralized services,  P&T committee, medication management, and medication safety, TPN preparation, sterile preparations.

 

 

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

a-  Knowledge and Understanding:

a.1. identify the hospital pharmacist functions in the hospital pharmacy

a.2. identify the role of the pharmacist in medicine management and safety

a.3. identify the role of the pharmacist in the P&T committee

a.4. define the requirements for TPN and sterile preparations

a.5. recognize nutritional problems in hospitalized patients

b- Intellectual Skills.

b.1. prepare safe and effective medications for patients

b.2  recognize safe ,effective and economical use of medications

 b.3. recognize and select guidelines in preparing hospital formulary

b. 4. assess drug interactions and adverse drug reactions

b.5. develop a plan for TPN solutions based on nutritional requirements

a.6. devise monitoring parameters for TPN solutions

a.7. demonstrate understanding of the impact of contemporary compounding on therapeutic outcomes

c- Professional and Practical Skills:

c.1. employ proper documentation for medicines in hospital pharmacy

c.2. design guidelines in preparing hospital formulary

c.3. design inventory control for a hospital pharmacy

c.4. employ proper documentation and drug filling system

c.5. apply techniques learned in contemporary compounding for selected patients.
