Course Description

A mixed lecture/activity course that involves skills in research from different aspects, including: Library and literature skills (both online and printed resources), formulation of new research ideas, Research project design (including proposal writing and defense, proposal submission, fund raising, research design including experimental and theoretical approaches), Result analysis (tabulation, graphing, plots, presentation), Result discussions and comparisons), Technical report writing, Publishing skills (conference presentations, article writing, review writing, novelty highlighting, submission skills), Publishing ethics (Ethics of citations and plagiarism, co-authorship, acknowledgement, documentation of findings), and Excellence in publishing (Looking for credible journals, avoiding predatory publishers). The focal issue of the course study will be sustainable energy engineering.

Course Objectives

The course aims at enabling the learner to gain awareness and practical experience in sustainable energy engineering research, including reading, design and publishing. After completing the course, the learner should be able to master own literature surveys, find out novel genuine ideas for further investigation, write-up new proposals (with financial support), design own research methodology, analyze own results, write technical reports, write up theses (defense, discussions, presenting) and dissemination of scientific publications (papers, patents, reviews, conference presentations). All such skills will be acquired by the learner, without sacrificing any of known scientific ethics. Observing publishing quality is another objective.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

Upon course completion, the learner is expected to be able to:

  1. Consult different literature sources (primary, secondary and tertiary sources), including printed and online sources.
  2. Formulate own ideas that are suitable for establishing novel research activities.
  3. Write up novel research proposals in the areas of sustainable energy, including funding.
  4. Design research methodologies (including experimental, theoretical, simulation and/or computational research) and undertaking own research.
  5. Analyze own results, compare with literature and write up technical reports.
  6. Write up own thesis, submit, present and defend it.
  7. Disseminate own results and find the suitable method (conference presenting, research papers, subject reviews, possible patents) while respecting publishing ethics and traditions.
