Course Description

The course aims to introduce the chemistry students to modern areas of technology where chemistry is intensively needed. The students are expected to see how contemporary chemists participate in Research & Development in new applications of advanced materials. The course is more suitable for students who have already studied earlier Materials Science course 23465

Course Objectives

The course is mainly concerned with modern applications of advanced new materials. It starts with introductory background to crystalline and non-crystalline solids, together with XRD and SEM characterizations. Organic and inorganic solids are included. Bulk crystals and thin film technology will be presented. Semi-conductivity phenomena and applications in renewable energy will be discussed. Capacitors, batteries, LCDs, conducting polymers, liquid ionics, fiber optics, and other state-of-the-art topics are included.

Intended learning Outcomes and Competences

Use his/her chemistry backgrounds in understanding contemporary advanced high-technology.  Both theory and applications will thus be heavily involved, with a focus on inorganic chemistry and new materials applications
