Before joining An-Najah, Dr. Sharaka worked as a legal and fiscal consultant with the Palestinian Ministry of Finance. Also, he worked with Palestinian Independent Commission for Human Rights, along with Dr. Hanan Ashrawi. Since 1990 until now, Dr. Sharaka also has worked as a civil and criminal lawyer who has defended many political and military prisoners in front of the military court. In 1995, when it became politically feasible for the Palestinian people to establish the faculty of law, Dr. Sharaka played an instrumental role in helping found the legal department at An-Najah University. Here, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1998-2000. Dr. Sharaka established the UNESCO Chair for Human Rights and Democracy to monitor the human rights situation in Palestine and Israel. While working with UNESCO, Dr. Sharaka also coordinated the first international conference on the topic of human rights democracy and peace. It was a three-day event that hosted numerous experts from both the Arab world and Europe.
He is currently working on several research studies about environmental, administrative and tax law.
With an extensive experience in administrative and managerial roles, Dr. Sharaka is happy to shift his focus solely to teaching and shaping new generations of legal experts. He seeks to raise legal awareness and build a culture of tolerance among his students. In his classes, he encourages student-led discussions about current events on a variety of disciplines, as, in his opinion, lawyers must be knowledgeable and well-versed in different types of knowledge. He has taught a range of classes at Birzeit University, including Financial and Administrative Law, Humanitarian Law, International Law, Human Rights Law, and classes on women’s rights and gender-based violence. At An-Najah, Dr. Sharaka teaches MA students from different departments, including law, accounting and has supervised over 100 MA theses.
