Development of Trip Generation Models for Salfit City and Comparison with Estimated Models for Jericho

Trip generation modeling is considered as a basic step in urban transportation planning and demand forecasting processes. Limited work had been done in this field in Palestine. The development of trip generation models requires extensive surveys, in depth analysis, and considerable time, cost, and effort. The primary objective of this paper is to develop trip generation models for Salfit City, and to compare the results with the already estimated trip generation models for Jericho City, and therefore, examine the potential of model transfer. To do so, the paper first considers estimation of trip generation models for Salfit City based on data collected through questionnaires investigating the trip generation pattern and the socio-economic characteristics of a randomly selected sample of households in the city, using linear regression analysis. The study considers a similar approach to that followed for estimating the respective models for Jericho City. The general model of the total number of trips generated by a household, the trip generation models based on trip purpose, and trip making period, are estimated. Standard statistical tests are run to examine the soundness of the developed models for Salfit, and to examine the statistical significance of the difference with those of Jericho. The outcome of the analysis shows that there is high similarity in the descriptive statistics and in the resulting general and key trip generation models between the two cities for the general and some specific trip purposes. This would facilitate the potential for trip generation model transfer between Palestinian towns.
