This study aims to explore the role of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in redesigning contemporary furniture through the determinants of Palestinian cultural identity, in response to the challenges of representing cultural dimensions in modern design outputs.

The significance of the research lies in its attempt to achieve a deliberate balance between modernity and cultural rootedness, through a design approach based on the thoughtful integration of cultural identity elements in ways that enhance both the aesthetic and functional dimensions of furniture design. The study adopts an applied analytical methodology, whereby a set of contemporary furniture models is analyzed according to key determinants of Palestinian cultural identity, including natural materials, traditional ornaments and embroidery, national symbols, handicrafts, color schemes, and local botanical elements. Based on this analysis, conceptual design prompts were developed using selected generative AI tools and subsequently employed to generate new design models via the Leonardo.ai platform, after prompt formulation and refinement using ChatGPT and Claude AI in addition to using Prome AI to enhance the visual quality and realism of the generated images.

A dual-input strategy was implemented, combining conceptual textual prompts with reference images in order to enhance the accuracy of cultural identity representation within the generated outputs. The resulting models were then evaluated according to a set of criteria, including conceptual depth, structural integration, cultural authenticity, functionality, and contemporary aesthetics, alongside a comparative analytical assessment between the original and redesigned models. The findings indicate that guiding generative AI tools through conscious conceptual inputs, supported by precise visual references, can improve the representation of cultural identity in contemporary furniture design, particularly when cultural symbols are translated from superficial decorative motifs into structural components of the design language.

The results also highlight the potential of generative AI tools as supportive instruments within the design process, capable of expanding design alternatives and stimulating creativity, while not replacing the designer’s creative and analytical role.
