Title:              A Guide for Refractive Error Management in Children

Abstract:       Refractive error anomalies can have a detrimental effect on the normal visual development. Many considerations must be taken into account when prescribing, including the effect of spectacle prescriptions on the emmetropization process and the child’s visual function. Numerous guidelines exist to assist clinicians in prescribing for infants and children, but little is known about the evidence-based research behind the development of these guidelines. This presentation aims to provide an updated evidence-based guideline that will assisst clinicians in their clinical decision making when prescribing for infants, and children up to and including school age. The focus will be on refractive anomalies that are not associated with other disorders, such as strabismus and binocular vision dysfunctions. Clinical cases will be presented to demonstrate how the guideline can be utilized on a day-to-day basis when prescribing for children.
