This course aims at classifying the uniqueness in structure and properties of composite materials; commonly used fabrication techniques for Polymer Matrix Composites (PMCs), Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs), and Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs); important reinforcement phases; interfacial bonding, control and measurements for interfacial strength; formulation and relationships between elastic properties and geometrical parameters in laminae, in-plane random long fiber laminae, laminates, and short fiber composites; fiber end effects, load transfer at the interface; mechanical properties and failure of laminae, laminates and short fiber composites; fracture and energy absorption mechanisms in composite materials.
